Spa Speakers is a lively public speaking club based in Leamington Spa. Our mission is to help people like you become more confident communicators and leaders, no matter what your current level and experience. We are part of a non-profit educational organisation called Toastmasters International, a world leader in communication and leadership development with a membership base of 350,000.
Is it for me?
If you want to improve your presentation skills at work, need to a give a talk or sales presentation, have a best man’s speech to give, or are faced with any situation where you have to communicate to a group of people, Spa Speakers has something to offer you.
The club attracts seasoned hands wanting to fine-tune their oratory skills, inexperienced speakers who dread facing an audience, and everyone else in between. With more emphasis on practice and less on theory, our regular meetings are best described as learn-by-doing workshops where members hone their speaking skills through repeated practice and continuous feedback in a friendly, no-pressure atmosphere.
What if I’m terrified of speaking in public?
Spa Speakers recognises that speaking in public can be pretty scary (that’s why a lot of us joined in the first place!) so our meetings are designed to be, first and foremost, safe, supportive, friendly and fun.
What if I’m an experienced speaker?
For speakers who are more experienced, we have a number of very accomplished members who can help you to further grow your oration skills, and if you are up for the challenge, you can test your prowess at the international public speaking contests held by Toastmasters International. Winners at the club can go on to compete in successive rounds, and possibly reach the international finals. Who knows, you might be the next world champion!
Everyone is welcome
We think there is a pretty good chance you’ll fit in to the club. We are lucky to have around 40 members from a range of backgrounds and of every level of experience. Take a look at our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to see more. Also take a look at who is on the club committee.
What happens at a typical meeting?
We have fortnightly meetings where we develop, practice and improve our communication, presentation and leadership skills. We devote the first half to prepared speeches; a selection of members are asked in advance to give a short speech written and rehearsed before the meeting.
In the second half, we have a go at delivering improvised speeches in a segment called table topics. Members are selected at random from the audience to stand up and speak about some selected topic for a couple of minutes. Table topics challenges you to think on your feet and get used to speaking publicly off the cuff. It can start out somewhat nerve-racking, but soon enough you’ll want to keep on doing it again and again!
Oh, and we also have a break half way through the meeting – meaning free snacks! 🙂
Is it for you?
The best way to find out if it’s for you is to try it! Visit us as a guest, totally free, with no obligation to join, and see if we have something to offer you. We look forward to welcoming you to our next guest meeting.
