The baseline time requirement for the Social Secretary is around 1 hour a week. The role holder however is free to more if they so wish!
Have an hour a week a spare? Then read on!
It should also be noted that the Social Secretary is not an “official” Toastmasters committee position, but something unique to our club. One consequence is if the Social Secretary attends a Club Officer Training event, it does not contribute credit towards a DCP point. That said, attending such an event is highly recommended for the educational value it offers.
Why should I take on the role?
Organising social events requires leadership. Deciding what events to run, engaging other members to help out in making them happen, promoting the events well to get good attendance, and then running the events on the day requires delegation, planning, motivation, salesmanship and lots of enthusiasm! You can develop a lot of skills doing this role, all the while having a tonne of fun!
Spa Speakers is a great club because we have a friendly, supportive and lively community that genuinely enjoys hanging out beyond regular meetings. The Social Secretary plays a vital role in nurturing and sustaining that sense of community by organising events that allows us to connect on a regular basis. That is very rewarding.
It’s not a time consuming role either, and so ideal for someone who wants to get a taste for playing a leadership role but doesn’t have masses of spare time. You’ll get a seat at the table of our committee meetings and a chance to participate in making crucial decisions for the club. As a result it’s a great introduction to being part of the leadership team.
Here is a bit more detail about the role.
You would create a calendar of social and educational events
Working with the committee, you would aim to have a social event each month of the Toastmaster year and encourage as much participation as possible. For example, we’ve had bowling nights, curry nights, coffee and cake mornings, wine tasting and Xmas meals. The only limit is your imagination and a social budget of exactly £0.00 (and it’s never stopped us!)
The club runs additional educational days on top of our regular meetings, such as evaluation workshops, rhetoric workshops, Tabletopics workshops etc. You would work with the committee to plan and put these into action.
Finally, we run our own contests, and ocassionally host events on behalf of the Toastmasters area. The Social Secretary would be a key party in making these events a success.
You ensure every member engaged in the social program
Members very familiar with the club will easily engage with the club’s social activities. Newer members, however, might be a bit more reluctant. A really important part of the Social Secretary’s job is to ensure every member get involved, not just a small group who are very familiar with each other and the club. No cliques at Spa Speakers; our social program is for everyone.
You would take charge of themed evenings
At Spa Speakers, we enjoy adding a bit of spice to our regular meetings now and then by giving them a theme. We’ve had pantomime themed nights, Halloween themed nights, “run the meeting in reverse order” meeting nights, and there are lots more ways that have yet to be explored to make meetings special. As Social Secretary, you’d make sure that happens!
You take charge of making the club experience special for individual members
At Spa Speakers, we like to something special for members when something important happens. When a member leaves, or starts a family, gets married, makes an extraordinary contribution to the club, we might get a card, a gift or acknowledge that member in our communications. A great Social Secretary will be right on top of adding that extra touch to the club experience for our members. Our tradition of sharing and celebrating the successes and notable occasions for every one of our members is one of the reasons Spa Speakers is special.
The Social Secretary is not a core part of the committee according to Toastmasters, but it is a core part of Spa Speakers. They play a huge role in making this club a really special place.

We’d love you to be our Social Secretary!
