Spa Speakers is a lively public speaking club based in Leamington Spa. Our mission is to help people like you become more confident communicators and leaders, no matter what your current level and experience. We are part of a non-profit educational organisation called Toastmasters International, a world leader in communication and leadership development with a membership base of 292,000.
Is it for me?
If you want to improve your presentation skills at work, need to a give a talk or sales presentation, have a best man’s speech to give, or are faced with any situation where you have to communicate to a group of people, Spa Speakers has something to offer you.
The club attracts seasoned hands wanting to fine-tune their oratory skills, inexperienced speakers who dread facing an audience, and everyone else in between. With more emphasis on practice and less on theory, our regular meetings are best described as learn-by-doing workshops where members hone their speaking skills through repeated practice and continuous feedback in a friendly, no-pressure atmosphere.
What if I’m terrified of speaking in public?
Spa Speakers recognises that speaking in public can be pretty scary (that’s why a lot of us joined in the first place!) so our meetings are designed to be, first and foremost, safe, supportive, relaxed and fun.
What if I’m an experienced speaker?
For speakers who are more experienced, we have a number of very experienced members, some of whom have achieved The Distinguished Toastmaster award, the highest Toastmasters International bestows, who can help you to further grow your oration skills. If you are up for the challenge, why not test your prowess in district, regional and even national speaking competitions run regularly by Toastmasters, UK and Ireland?
Everyone is welcome
We think there is a pretty good chance you’ll fit in to the club. We are lucky to have around 30 members from a range of backgrounds and of every level of experience. Take a look at our Facebook page to see more, have a look at the club committee, or watch this video to see some of our members in front of the camera!
What happens at a typical meeting?
We have fortnightly meetings where we develop, practice and improve our communication, presentation and leadership skills. We devote the first half to prepared speeches. Here, a few people are asked in advance to give their own short speech which they have written and rehearsed before the meeting.
In the second half, we have a go at some improvised speeches. Here, we take it in turns to stand up, randomly select a funny topic, and speak about it. It challenges you to think on your feet and helps you get used to speaking publicly. It can start out somewhat nerve-racking, but you quickly relax and soon enough you’ll want to keep on doing it again and again!
Oh, and we also have a break half way through the meeting – meaning free snacks! 🙂
We have created a short video to help convey the spirit of the club. Please have a look!
BUT!!!….the best way to find out if it’s for you is to try it! Visit us as a guest, totally free, with no obligation to join, and see if we have something to offer you.
