The Communication Programme

Members who joined before 20th March 2018 follow 2 concurrent training programmes at Toastmasters. The first is the communication track, and the second is the leadership track.

Members who join after this date elect to follow one of 10 educational paths from the new Pathways program. If you have recently joined, the information on this page is not relevant to you. You can find out more about the Pathways program by clicking here.

Here we talk about the communication track.

The foundational programme: Competent Communicator

The Competent Communicator (CC) manual is the first step in the communication track.

It is a 10 project programme designed to help you develop your speaking skills one step at a time.  Every project builds upon what you have learned in the preceding project and helps you to learn about organisation, how to use body language and voice to convey your message, select the right words and use visual aids.  You also learn how to speak persuasively and inspire others

An evaluator will give you constructive feedback on each speech you present to enable you to learn, improve and build your speaking skills.  The evaluator will complete the relevant feedback section of our speech and your VPE will sign the Project Completion Record at the back of your manual.

Completing the Competent Communicator manual

Once all projects are complete, your VPE can register your achievement with World Headquarters online.  You will receive a well deserved Competent Communicator Certificate and badge with your name and club number. Well done!

Where do I go next?

When you complete your Competent Communicator (CC) manual, you will be given complete control on which direction to develop your skills as a speaker. A wide selection of what are called Advanced Communicator manuals will be made available to you, from which you will pick 2 to focus on. These 2 first advanced manuals are given to you for free when you complete your first CC award: please let your VPE know which manuals you’d like to choose, as these need to be selected before the VPE submits your award to Toastmasters International.

Each of the 15 advanced manuals contains 5 speeches each which you will work on with the support of your mentor. These are given below:

  •  The Entertaining Speaker (ref. 226A)
  • Speaking to Inform (ref. 226B)
  • Public Relations (ref. 226C)
  • The Discussion Leader (ref. 226D)
  • Specialty Speeches (ref. 226E)
